The new TEXAS SWING

GEARING UP FOR SPRING!

SpringCalender2024.png

Dallas United offers rowing programs for teens 6th grade through 12th grade. Rowing is one of the best exercises for increased fitness, strength and cardio capacity. Teamwork, accountability, confidence and mental focus are all benefits of coming together as one in a boat on the water. Through the sport of rowing, DUC combats childhood obesity, promotes physical literacy, and teaches life skills through training, competition, and earned experiences. Dallas United gets teens moving on the water and in life. Dallas United Crew is the largest youth rowing program in North Texas. DUC's coaches are skilled in introducing athletes to the sport and preparing them to race elite crews at the highest level. First-season rowers enter the team as a "novice." A novice rower is an athlete in their first year of rowing competition. At DUC we designed a program that will teach athletes everything they need to know to learn the sport of rowing and transition the varsity squad your second year. 90% of our novice team has no previous rowing experience before coming to DUC. You bring the grit, we will give you the training. MULTI SPORT ATHLETES WELCOME!!!

"In these three years, I have found a sport that I love and am passionate about! Not only does rowing keep me fit, but it lets me visit the country and experience new things. I have developed great relationships with the other oarsmen and coxswains. Rowing is a sport that builds character and really shapes us and how we interact with society. Rowing pushes me to new limits which previously felt unreachable."~ RG (age: 16)

"ROWING CAN CHANGE THE WORLD"

WHAT WE TEACH

TexasStateChampions.JPEG
"I saw it happen to my sons and to so many others. In this sport, there are no superstars, there’s no one who scores the winning point. The whole crew in the boat, they all win or lose together. You crossed the line together. They call it the ultimate team sport for that.  I see it happen and then I see them kind of transcend. All of a sudden, you have a kid who has confidence and who is getting physical fitness. They’re part of a group of people who would do anything for them. "
~Dave Slear, DUC President (2019-2023)

ELEVATING
SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

ACADEMICS FIRST

DUC Youth Rowers are first, and foremost students. With years of experience training the fastest crews in USRowing's Central Region, our coaches recognize that academic success and rowing success are inextricably linked. Our culture reflect this. Built into our schedule and training are student-friendly policies such as: excused practice on SAT and ACT dates, an allowance for school and other extracurricular absences, and dedicated study hours.

ATHLETE RECOGNITION

Rowing, like school-sponsored (UIL) sports, builds character and life skills. Yet, offering rowing exceeds the resources of public schools. DUC's partner-educators recognize this. So, they team with DUC coaches to establish standards and elevate rowers with school awards like varsity letters and scholar-athlete awards.

SERVICE HOURS

Some public school districts and private schools have established a minimum number of hours in community service as a graduation requirement. Service is woven into DUC's culture. As a non-profit, DUC offers a variety of service opportunities working with adaptive rowers, disadvantaged youth, or in stewardship of the lake we call home.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL EDUCATION CREDITS

Texas Law and Off CampusPhysical Education (for public school districts): Texas Education Code 28.025(b-10), and Texas Administrative Code (TAC) Chapter 74, Subchapter B authorize awarding physical education credit for student participation in appropriate private or commercially sponsored physical education programs.

House Bill 72 and Subsequent Legislation: Comprehensive References and Explanations (page 153) states that such off-campus education programs are essentially Olympic events where students spend significant amounts of time in training. The Commissioner of Education approves each school district’s off-campus physical education programs.

A LIFETIME SPORT

WHY SHOULD THE KIDS HAVE ALL THE FUN?

ADULT ROWING

A.K.A. "MASTERS"

WHAT IS "MASTERS" ROWING? A rower may compete as a "masters" rower starting a year or more after high school, typically ranging from 27 to 70 years old and may have any level of experience. Masters compete in age-based categories against others of the same class, or with handicaps. TRAINING & COMPETING: Programs are offered either 2 or 3 days per week. New rowers would start with Learn-to-Row. Intermediate Rowing, is for anyone who has completed a DUC Learn-to-Row or other team's training basic level program. Training & Racing Teams practice at the same time. Training Team athletes may have local race opportunities based on interest. Racing Team athletes are selecting, training, and boating for specific races. See program descriptions below for season dates and details. DUC Masters focus on sweep rowing in 8+s and 4+s, with an opportunity to row additional smaller boats on a case-by-case basis.

BENEFITS OF ROWING

7

WEIGHT LOSS

Because you are engaging multiple muscles, you are burning more calories than you would if you were only focusing on one muscle group at a time.

LOW-IMPACT

If you have suffered from an injury to your elbows, knees, hips or shoulders, this exercise allows you to get a high-intensity workout without the negative effects of high-impact training.

MUSCLE TONING
Rowing requires very little pressure on the joints and focuses on the legs, back, shoulders and arms. As you perform this workout, your core will be engaged as well.
CARDIO HEALTH

Rowing Improves lung, heart, and circulation systems, too. Not only does rowing help you burn calories quickly, but it increases your hear rate and improves cardiovascular fitness in less time.

STRESS RELIEF

Rowing is a fantastic workout for reducing stress. Rowing increases the number of endorphins released in the body, which reduces stress and can even lift feelings of depression.

WHOLE SELF RESULTS

This ultra-inclusive workout can help you cut down your workout time by targeting multiple muscles without having to switch machines.

COMMUNITY

Team boats set shared goals, and with those goals, crews encourage and support each other. Fellowship and camaraderie build the crew.

VETERANS & ADAPTIVE

Dallas United Crew is proud to be serving our Veterans. Rowing is a unique sport that provides those with disabilities both visible and invisible the opportunity to get back to nature and get on the water.

Rowing with DUC Veterans bridges the barriers to team sports for adaptive athletes. You will get to know your fellow veterans and adaptive rowers, and build friendships through your shared experiences. Phyically, you will build strength, flexibility, and endurance. Rowing offers both recreational and competitive opportunities. You will be part of something bigger. Our veterans often volunteer to work with DUC's youth rowers. MAKING HISTORY: In 2015, Dallas United Crew hosted the first ever rowing exhibition at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. Additionally, our Veterans were the first wheelchair athletes to race at the Heart of Texas Regatta - Austin, Texas.
