Dallas United Crew's competitive travel team, formed in 2002, is the largest coed rowing team in Texas. Dallas United Crew draws athletes from several high schools around the metroplex. All Dallas United Crew athletes practice and race in the best sweep and sculling equipment possible. Some of our race boats are 60 feet long (as long as a tractor trailer!), carry up to nine people and weigh as little as 200 pounds. Our four experienced coaches hold certifications from US Rowing, CPR and First Aid, Cooper Institute and Texas Boating Licenses to ensure the safety of our athletes and to prepare them to compete nationally and later, collegiately. Because of this, we expect a sincere commitment of fundraising, attendance and finances from our athletes and their families.
Whether or not Dallas United Crew holds tryouts for its competitive travel team will vary according to interest level that year. Tryouts will be held the first week of August if needed. Any student who is willing to make the required commitment is encouraged to try out. While the team is formed during the first week of August, new rowers are accepted throughout the year at the coaches discretion. Competition is offered for all ability levels. New rowers will be taught how to row during training camps and regular practice. Prior experience is not necessary or expected however, participants (and their parents) are required to acknowledge that rowing has inherent risks, that they understand the nature of rowing, and that they are physically fit to participate.
Practices
Our team holds practices five days a week, from 4:30-6:30PM weekdays and Saturday mornings. A normal practice involves some land training as well as on-the-water practice. Rowing is the ultimate walk-on sport, as most of our athletes begin with little or no rowing experience. We promise that our athletes will have fun, be safe, and go fast—in doing so, they’ll also get into the best shape of their lives.
Race at the Highest Level
We have raced in Dallas, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Waco, Austin, Atlanta, Chattanooga, St. Louis, Philadelphia and Cincinnati, and regularly travel to eight regattas a year. During the regular season, every team member competes at every race and our yearly goals include finishing top three in our region (made up of nine states) in every category we enter. We have qualified boats to compete at US Rowing Youth Nationals every year since 2006.
Gain College Admittance and Scholarships
90% of female collegiate rowers with high school rowing experience receive scholarships, while many male rowers find help with admission to colleges of their choice when committing to their rowing clubs.
